It is less than a month since Spurs and Chelsea met in the Carling Cup final at Wembley, and just over two months since the teams clashed at Stamford Bridge in the reverse Premier League fixture.
While Chelsea won the League encounter on 16th January 2-0 thanks to goals from Juliano Belletti (19th minute) and Shaun Wright-Phillips (80), it was Tottenham who upset the odds at Wembley to lift the first trophy of the season. Didier Drogba had put the Blues in front on 39 minutes, but when Wayne Bridge handled in the area, Dimitar Berbatov equalised from the penalty spot (70) and, in the fourth-minute of extra-time, Jonathan Woodgate headed the winner.
Chelsea's defeat in the final unleashed a torrent of criticism of Avram Grant's management style, and the questioning of his credentials intensified when the Blues went to Barnsley in the sixth round of the FA Cup as overwhelming favourites and were beaten 1-0 by the struggling Championship side.Tottenham may also be spurred on by the opportunity to achieve back-to-back home wins over Chelsea, after having achieved their only victory in 31 Premier League meetings in November 2006, when Aaron Lennon secured the three points after Chelsea captain John Terry had been sent off.
